AK Queer
The AK Queer exists since the winter semester of 2013/14 with the aim to give students the opportunity to engage with queer topics on a regular basis.
We use the term queer as an umbrella term for romantic, sexual and/or gender identities that do not fit into our societal norms. The acronym LGBTQ+ is also often used for queer identities, which stands for lesbian, bisexual, gay, trans*, inter*, asexual/aromantic, and many more.
Queer is also a field for studies and a branch of science in which stereotypes are broken down and different forms of oppression are understood as interconnected. On the website of the network GeQuInDi there is an overview of the classes on queer topics every semester.
The work of the AK Queer focuses on creating networking opportunities for queer students at the University of Bayreuth. In addition, we participate in university politics through the student parliament and advocate for the interests of queer students. Depending on the capacities of our active members, we also organize cultural events, workshops and other educational projects, for which we are always happy to receive ideas, support or feedback.
Our current projects/project ideas include:
- A queer Stammtisch (regulars' table), which usually takes place every two weeks during the semester and is open to students and members of the university as well as people from outside the university.
- Queer parties
- Ask a Cliché: Queer Edition, an educational event on a wide variety of queer identities.
- Speed dating - for both queer and straight dating
- Workshops (general to introduce queer issues and terminology and also targeted to student teachers or faculty)
- Unisex toilets at the university
